Eating Out In the UK

food is eaten out of the home. It is forecasted that this amount will
increase by almost 20% by 2020 |
 | People in Britain spent £21.4b on
eating and drinking in restaurants last year, compared with £59b
spent on food eaten in the home |
 | The dominant sector in the industry is

1993 and 1997, from £3.35b to £4.14b. In contrast turnover of
alcoholic drinks grew by just 3% over the same period |
 | In a recent survey, 77% of all British
adults had at least one meal in a restaurant, pub or bar during the
previous three month period, 70% had more than one meal out and six
out of ten people had taken more than two meals |
 | In a recent survey, on non business
occasions, family meals were the most widespread amongst the over 35s,
with meals with friends coming second. In contrast, only 6 out of 10
15 to 24 year olds ate out with families, but three quarters of them
had a meal in a restaurant with friends |
